The Doorman Model

Is a Doorman an expense or an asset?


If you assume the Doorman's only job is to open and close doors, you could replace him with an automatic door and pocket the savings.


But what does the Doorman really do?


He provides status to the establishment.

He provides security.

He provides a deterrent to possible vagrants.

He provides warmth and a human touch.

He provides solutions to customers problems (e.g. directions, recommendations, accepts deliveries, etc.)


He is a representative of the hotel, the brand, and the quality inferred.


Now, is the Doorman an expense or an asset?


Use the Doorman Model to analyze what would typically be seen as an expense (or a cost center) to uncover the hidden (or obvious to everyone else but you!) value that customers really pay for.
